sometimes, you know things about your company that you cannot betrust to your boss, to your colleague - and maybe you would prefer to stay anonymous for fear of mobbing, losing your job. this can be the case. whistleblowers are often looked at as not very loyal but rather incorrect big-mouths. I guess in some cases this is true. many people lack courage of standing up for their opinion. however, some events are just too big for a single person, and for this, WIKILEAKS is a great tool. the Swiss Bank Julius Baer just achieved closure of one of the wikileaks domains because a former employee has published confidential client data (I don't know in what context). Another Swiss case was UBS Meili, who saved some files dating from WWII that were about to "disappear". and Wikileaks was also good for publicity when some documents about Guantanamo Bay - Gitmo - procedures were leaked.

among the categories on wikileak today are, besides Bank Julius Baer and Rudolf Elmer, also

I just hope it is proper intelligence - not propaganda. "wiki" does not always stand for quality.

japanese sweets

my contract has been extended, so I'll hang around in New York for another year!

I feel the difference in the work. I now come guilt-free late to meetings, I do not blush anymore when being put on the spot ("... and what does UNHCR suggest?") and I am not shy to take the last two japanese sweets that the doctor from the Hiroshima Peacebuilders Center brought to the meeting this morning! It was so lovely, I went back to the office and did some research. Here what I found out and what it looks like :-)

Momij Monju もみじ饅頭: The maple leaf shaped sponge cake with sweet bean paste is Hiroshima special. You can get vacuum packed gift boxes for long storage but when you're in Hiroshima it is suggested to buy fresh packed. Favorite include chocolate and cream cheese flavors.

Nishikido: 1-13-23, Hikari-machi, Higashi-ku, Hiroshima 732-0052
TEL: 082-262-3131

so, if you happen to be in Hiroshima, or attend the Peacebuilders Centre 6-week course (you have to be Asian for this, though, for the time being) - get those Momij Monju!

born under a bad sign?

d Fasnacht isch umme

the world keeps going round. Rambo aka Silvester Stallone just declared in an interview, "there will never be world peace". He said mankind will never learn, and there will always be new wars.

true. lets just hope that when Kosovo declares independence coming Sunday, it will not go into rough and violent waters. it will be a beginning - but the story is just about to start. I'm not too optimistic as for their future, unless they do match with Serbia in some ways.

However, pessismistic in intellect, optimistic in will: URIME PAVARESIE - just to live this one moment after all that happened is worth ---- (well, what? bloody borders.)

Wort zum Sonntag (am Montag)

did you know that the seven sins are not listed in the bible? they are in the bible, but not that easy to pick out. it was mainly Pope Gregory in the 6th Century who listed them, and then Dantes book/oeuvre Divine Comedy, a three-part work composed of Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise, outlining those sins.

Lust (luxuria) -- lechery, adultery, bestiality, rape.

Gluttony (gula) -- over-indulgence, over-consumption, to the point of waste. includes withholding from the needy.

Greed (avaritia) -- excess in acquisition, incl. treason, bribery, robbery, manipulation of authority.

Sloth (acedia) -- goes from sadness into apathy, depression, joylessness: the refusal to enjoy God's creation. it is more than mere laziness: it is "unwillingness to care".

Wrath (ira) -- incl. seeking revenge outside the working of a justice system: vigilantism, goes as far as genocide (goes as far as people take it....). it is perverted love of justice into revenge and spite.

Envy (invidia) -- insatiable desire, similar to greed but not materialistic. close to delight in misfortune of others. "sorrow for anothers good".

Pride (superba) -- the ultimate source from which the others arise: love of self perverted to the point of hatred and contempt for one's neighbour, eg vanity, narcissism.

Isn't it interesting? isn't it a valid and good ethical concept? you read all this, and it strikes a tone. these are basic vices of humanity. have always been, and likely will always be (as long as humanity exists). "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do" - is clearly not my statement ;-)

next to come....

do you couple with Leibniz, holding up that we live in the best of all possible worlds? or Schopenhauer, either pointlessly continuing the cycle of life or facing extinction? did you laugh and despair on the optimism of Candide, shouting in your thoughts Oswald Spenglers famous quote "Optimism is cowardice"? or, instead of chosing one or the other (popular belief saying that optimism is better) - we might need what has been called "pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will".

  • GEORGE CLOONEY on his appointment as a United Nations peace envoy

good. he is taking it seriously. however, some rules and procedures are not just there for the sake of having rules and procedures - so I quite agree with the Russian delegation:
George Clooney said Thursday that his new role as a U.N. Messenger of Peace is one of his most difficult yet, especially because he wasn't exactly allowed to deliver his message. Clooney, the ninth U.N. peace envoy, was scheduled to address a meeting of troop-contributing nations about conditions faced by the peacekeeping force in Sudan's troubled western region. But representatives of Russia and other countries at the meeting objected to an actor telling them how to handle the crisis -- and he was asked not to speak after all.
do not miss the chance to "see" Hafez' opinion about it!
